microphones on one computer

Postby parveny » Thu Mar 03, 2011 12:03 am

How do I use two microphones on one computer with only one microphone slot? I have a computer that has one 3.5mm Jack microphone slot. I have my microphone that I plug in and use. When I use my computer with friends we sometimes struggle to use the same microphone because we have to keep passing it around. We have another microphone but can only plug in one at a time. What can I do so I can use both?

well, you will need to start with some sort of interface. there's quite a bit to choose from. here's a link to the beginning of a long quest. http://homerecording.about.com/od/homestudiobasics/ht/howto_interface.htm

here's a discussion group that you should browse as they have more than what you're looking for right now but will undoubtedly use in the future should you continue recording. you may have to sign up like you did for the Seventh Circle forum.

i would recommend at least 4 balanced inputs with transparent mic pres and firewire. presonus, motu, focusrite, m-audio, rme etc... have models that may work for you. you will need a compatible DAW for your interface that will run on your computer. I assume you have a DAW because you're recording in the box. If so, you'll have to make sure that the interface is compatible or understood in the DAW. goodluck.
