Substitution around U1

Postby SoundBase » Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:25 am

Hi all,
I am currently awaiting my set of C84's and was looking over the schematic. In another project I had done a while ago I had used asimilar topology using one OPA2134 opamp for the gainstage and an OPA2604 for the output buffer stage. In looking of the schematic and was wondering if i could substitute the OPA2134 for OPA2604 in U1 (assuming I socket these).

Any opinions ?

Thanks,
Chuck

Why?

I'm not being facetious - I just wonder why you'd seek to 'improve' on something which probably wasn't cost-constrained into its current condition.

Just socket the op-amps and you'll be able to experiment with other chips and see what the difference is. Though I'm with Tele on this...usually it's 5532s or other less expensive chips being swapped for Burr Browns in topologies like this. I have yet to hear the C84, but judging by the other 3 designs it's hard to imagine there was a cost driven short-cut taken with this design.

Personally I really like OPA2604s and am glad to see they are used here.

My reason for suggestion the different op-amp was to use an opamp with lower distortion (which is what the 2134 is). However it only runs up to +/- 18 volts, so if I were to make that change I'd have to run the rails at 18 instead of 24 volts and have less headroom.

Then again, the opamps are only as good as the circuit that they're in, so it may not make much difference (since I'm sure Tim designed the circuit well). It was really just more of an experiment. I'll probably socket them anyway and if I can find other opamp that run at +/- 24 volts, I will and report back my findings.
