smoked R18

I thought the 61 volts I had out off PS02 J2 pin 5 would settle under a load from the N72's.

I was wrong, and R18 smoked.

I think its still usable, but I really need to know about the U1 issue because the resistor goes straight up to 24V.
should I take out U1?

I am also still unsettled about the ground tied to Conn 3 pin 2. There were no instructions about adding any grounds on the N72. Is this correct?

R18 doesn't go to phantom, it goes to +24v. Are you sure you have the regulatr installed the correct way? Are there any shorted solder joints?

Connecting the N72s don't load the phantom supply. The +48V supply (should) only see a load when a phantom powered mic is connected and the phantom switch is "on". The problem in your particular case isn't the regulators, it's just that there's an insufficient load on the output of U3, the TL783.

At CONN3, you need to install a jumper between pins 1 and 3. Pin 2 is ground, and isn't connected to anything.
