what should I do with J1?

Postby Guest » Wed May 25, 2005 8:12 pm

I just plugged in my ps02 for the first time and about 5 seconds later C26 blew up! Does this have anything to do with J1? Because I didnt have anything on it. would that make C26 blow up? Nowhere in the assembly instruction or on the forum do I hear anything about J1?

oops , well I see that J1 is the pilot light.

But does anyone have any clues to why C26 would blow up?

Probably because it was installed backwards. Did we build it? It's a simple repair.

C26 is an electrolytic cap, one obvious possibility is that it was installed backwards.

I'd do a visual check, if that finds nothing, I'd power up, and check voltages at the power connector.

that is why its troubling me. After it blew , I unsolderied it from the board and saw that it was in installed correctly to begin with.

I thought everything was going to be fine. I did the resistence test before plugging in. I had 18.2 ohms on pins 1 and 3 on the IEC socket. After C26 blew I looked at the fuse and it was fine. C27 and C28 seemed to be fine also.

OH yea , does the holes in the board that are used for screwing the board to the chassis also used for grounding? Because now that I think about it , the only thing I had grounded was pin 2 of the IEC socket. Is there anymore grounding points on the board?

Also, make sure that the cap is rated at 35V or higher. A lower voltage cap would also likely blow up. The mounting holes are isolated, a grounding problem isn't likely to cause the symptoms you describe.
