C84 Voltages correct but no audio

Postby Ken Schumacher » Thu Sep 28, 2006 8:04 am

I finally finished my first kit, following the instructions very very carefully. Test procedure voltages measure perfectly +18, -18, 0, and 0 after adjusting the varistors. But I plug in an SM58 for a quick test, route the output of my newly constructed pre to a line input of my Mackie 1604vlz and get absolutely nothing. I tested the phantom power and get 47 volts when switched on, so that seems to be working OK. Yes, I know phantom isn't needed for an SM58 but I wanted to check what the pre puts out.

Tonight I plan to double check the line input cable, and also test the mic pre output by plugging directly into a DAT deck with adapter cables, but I doubt the cable is the problem. If anyone has advice on what to check next, I'm all ears.

Ah Ha!

This forum is great! Just read a posting about the L1 and L2 load isolators and realize I need to solder zero ohm resistors there. I misread the instructions and thought those components were optional. Hopefully I'll be listening to my first C84 tonight!

Success!

Soldered the two zero ohm resistors (they actually measured .4 ohm!) and it works! First listen on headphones with an SM58 and a Crown CM700 and it sounded CLEAN! Even with the gain all the way up.

On to C84 #2.
