Older and new C84 for stereo recording.

Postby PJD3 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:56 am

Hello all. I just recieved my second C84 today. I got a second one so to have 2 of the same pre's for stereo recordings. My question is, can I expect the same (or reasonably close) sonic performance from the one that I built about 3 years ago and the new one that I will be building now. I just wasnted to check in, in case that certain components had to be substituted for any reason. I'm not sure at this point say, it the OP amps sent to me 3 years ago are the same ones I got today. And thats that!
Any feedback on this will be very apprediated. If I need to order any components for the sake of "matching" my 2 C84's , I rather do it now.

Thank you so much for you time!

If the revision numbers are the same, you should be able to use them as stereo pairs with no issues whatever. What rev is your older C84?

Different Revs between C84's.

Hi Tim. As it turns out, the C84 I purchased a few years ago is Rev 1.3 (modified 11/11/05). New one I just recieved is Rev 1.9.1.
I can see that parts of the schematic are different. So, my main concern is, will I be able to make acceptable stereo recordings, or, will the differences in the C84 revisions be enough to compromise the accuracy/matching of left and right? I'd be interested in your opinion so I can make a call. I'm only using these with short cable runs and not doing anything highly critical.

Thank you Tim,

The biggest difference is that the gain matching at each step of the switch will be slightly different. You'll have to trim to get levels to match exactly.

2 C84's Different Revs

Thanks Tim, I can probably rest now. I can live with that. As long as there isn't a substantial difference in fidelity related characteristics, then all is good. No having to sell off old pres for new ones.

Thanks,

Tim, what are the secondary differences? Are they audible?
