OP-Amps

Hey guys,

I am new to the DIY preamp kits but they look like fun. I dont really have any experience with electronics so I am a little iffy on whether or not I should try this. I was thinking about getting an A12 for my first kit. I read about how they are similar to API pre's and are rockin for drums. I can follow directions pretty well, so I think that I would be ok at building these.

My questions are:

1/ What is an op-amp?

2/ Does the A12 come with one?

3/ If so, is it good, or should I get a better one?

4/ Are there better op-amps?

5/ Are there any good websites for morons like me about these topic/questions?

This seems like a good message board and everyone seems helpful/friendly, so I am hoping for some good replies with some good info!

They are real rockin for drums!

1. The op-amp is what does most of the amplification of the signal. It is a bunch of transistors, resistors and capacitors in one small pakcage.
2. You have to order the opamp separately, but you get a discount if you purchase the SC25 opamp with an A12 kit. Fill in the order form to see what I mean.
3. It's real good. I would go with it.
4. The SC25 is designed to sound like (clone?) the API 2520 opamp. I suppose the 2520 would be "most authentic", but most people can't tell a difference, and if they can, prefer the SC25.
5. The forum at Prodigy Professional has a META with links to some basic electronics guides. You can also post over there with questions about components and so forth.
