Hey Ryan and everyone,

Sorry if I'm the billionth person to ask this: tried the search function first as well as the FAQs and didn't come up with anything.

I've built one A12 kit successfully already (LOVE IT!) and am ready to start on a second. Recently discovered a really kickass electronics supply place very near my home so it occurred to me it would be healthy for my growth as a DIY'er to maybe shop the other components independently.

So, Ryan: do you sell the circuitboard alone by special order? I'd be interested in just picking up that plus the OpAmp if possible...

Once upon a time you could buy the kits this way, but no longer. Tim can no doubt comment.

Having said that, I'm not sure how "healthy" this would be; those who did it in the past generally said that (a) it was a pain in the butt, and (b) it inevitably cost more.

I'm not sure what benefit this will serve for you, other than guaranteeing that you're on your own if you have problems (which you could do voluntarily if you got all of the parts with the kit.)

But more power to you if this is what you want to do.

I'd love to see an electronic parts store like they had back when I was a kid (during the Space Age) but I haven't seen more than a few rows of parts in at least 20 years. Now I satisfy that urge by browsing the Mouser catalog...

That all seems to be sooo true. Just to get started with my "theory" I just finished pricing everything out online with DigiKey alone...which doe NOT include some of the big-ticket stuff like the transformers of course...and just for that stuff we're already up to $90 what with the fact that they require minimum quantities of 5 or 10 on a great deal of those components! So you are very correct I'm certain.

Yeah...idunno where you live but I'm up in Northern California and there's a very small chain of stores called HSC Electronics that have stores in Silicon Valley (the mothership) Sacramento, and Rohnert Park where I live. Apparently the store in my town is the second smallest and the one in Silicon Valley is fucking huge, but I was still blown away when I walked into their back room and saw bin after bin after bin of resistors, capacitors, etc. like you just described. I've never seen anything like that before so suffice to say I felt like a whole new world was set at my feet...

Ahh, good old Halted. Haven't been in there in years. I'm down in Santa Cruz part-time and have worked in the Valley for the last 16 years.

But I remember when Fry's was mostly test equipment and parts; 1000 count bags of RJ45 crimp-ons on one side of the aisle, potato chips on the other, RAM and condoms the next aisle over. Not quite what it used to be...
