sc10 vs sc25

Postby rustez » Wed Jan 07, 2009 10:09 pm

Hi I'm new,

i know that the sc10 is part of making the a12 sound more pacifica-esq, are there any other parts or contruction differences?

Also being that a pair of n72s are the only decent pres I have would I even want a pacifica-esq pre vs a api-ish pre?( know really subjective but i would love to hear your biased opinions). :)

I plan on doing four a12s eventually so maybe a pair of each would work?
would mixing pacifica-esq pres and api-ish pres work well on drum tracks?

Thanks for any unabashedly biased help you can offer.

Love the A12... and the N72

Hi rustez.
I have the A12 with the sc25 (which is more akin the API) and the N72. I also have some T15s. I thought the neve pre was going to be my workhorse but I end up using the A12 more often than not in single source situations. The A12 is fantastic on snare and overheads. I have a couple of singers who love it as well (it pairs nicely with my AT4050). I still use the n72s a lot as well... it's great how well these two pres can work together, especially when tracking drums. Depending on the situation I get great results with an A12 on snare, N72s on Kick (inside and out), A12s on OH or the T15s on OH. T15s on the Toms too.

Those T15s have been fantastic for me too. I've used them on a bunch of different things.

I know this doesn't answer your sc10 question directly, all I can say is if you build the A12, the sc25 option has worked great for me. I'd love to have another 8 channels of all of them!

SC25 vs SC 10

Postby FinishtheDay » Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:13 pm

I just finished building my second A12. In the first one I installed the SC 25 / API clone op amp. I also built a N 72 at the same time. With vocal testing I did not feel that the A 12 with the SC 25 (API 2520 clone) suited my voice nearly as well as the N 72. The A 12 was. of course, killer on electric guitar and even acoustics, really up front. The N72 was very smooth, and works well on voice with either a MXL V 69 or EV RE 20.
I wanted to try the Quad Eight /Pacifica style so I bought both the SC 10 and SC 25 op amps for the second A 12. I installed the SC 10 in the second A12 and set the supply voltage for +/- 24 volts.
I have been singing through it for several days, and its really a nice chain. For someone who is used to singing into transformerless pres and the FMR RNP, I really understand what they mean by "iron" now. It really is kind of a mix between an N 72 and an API, just like people say about the Quad Eights. Unfortunately, I can't say I've ever heard an actual Quad Eight. But the A12 with the SC 10 sounds pretty sweet to me.
I would encourage anyone to spend the extra bucks to pick up the SC10 when they're building the A12 and try swapping it out with the SC 25. It only takes about 2 minutes to change the supply voltage. The hardest part is getting the case apart.
I hope this is helpful since there's not much on the forum about the SC 10.
Has anyone else out there put together an A12 with the SC 10 op amp? What have you found it useful for?

I'm currently building another A12 with an SC10 so I'll let you know when I get it finished. I'll be doing a side by side test with the SC25. Good to know that the SC10 helps with vocals. I haven't found my A12's with SC25's to be useful for male vocals(pop/soul/funk), especially since I have a N72 and UA610 sitting next to it ;)
