Phase switch-which direction is in phase

Postby PW » Wed Jul 13, 2005 9:46 pm

I just bought 2 a12's and an n72 used and they are incredible. In am looking forward to adding more channels. Can someone confirm if setting the phase switch to the right puts the unit in phase or out of phase?

I was wondering this also. I just finished an N72. I assume it's out of phase when to the right.

For phasing to occur you need two signals, like when you are using a stereo mic setup. The sound coming from the source is identical to both mic's, the waveform is the exact same, but maybe it took longer to reach the secong mic and the waveform is exactly lined up witht he signal from the first mic. with the signal being slightly off a "phasing" sound will occur. One way around this is the phase switch, it throws the waveform 180 degrees off to cancel out the phasing between the two signals. but with a mono signal the phase swtch doesnt matter becuase a single signal cant be out of phase with itself. So really the switch works both ways, if its phasing one way flip it the other, and vice versa.

hopes this helps anyone out there.

Having said all that, it *is* useful to know which position results in a positive-going output given a positive-going input, if you're running multiple mics in the same space, particularly if there is more than one manufacturer involved. (Actually, the early C84s had backwards polarity relative to the other three SCA types unless you did the crossed-jumper hack.) Knowing ahead of time helps a lot, as trying to find the reverse-polarity mic by trial and error when you've got 10 or more on a drum kit isn't going to be much fun.

A dual-trace scope and a signal generator make it easy to verify.

The idea is that switches to the left is "normal" operation, with phantom on and straight polarity. Switches to the right turns phantom off and inverts polarity.
