N72 style Fader on A12 preamp?

Postby meteor » Mon Aug 21, 2006 5:21 pm

One of my favorite characterstics of tranny based pres is the ability to drive the output until it begs for mercy. I think most tranny based pres sound best on the edge of their limits. That said, could the trim knob on an A12 be switched to a fader knob like the N72 module?

Please say yes...

cheers,
Alright now... Back to the kiddie pool.

I thought the N72's "Fader" was still pre-Ouptput Tranny?

If you want to saturate the Output Transformer, you will need to pad the input to your AD or Tape Machine IIRC... I have some in-line XLR Pads that I use for this application.

Just trying to get by...

Yeah, I've got a pile of -20db pads for this very purpose and I could always get an ATTY, but it seems to me like the trim knob would be cooler and more useful if it worked as a fader. I reread my post and just figured out that I meant to say "drive the input."

Anyway, can this be done... anyone.
