Setting Voltage and Jumpers

I have 6 A12's and two J99... Should the output volume be kinda close... I set the A12 to +-16 and the J99 to +-24... Is this correct? I have pins from J1 and J2 jumpered to each other just two pins not all four... I have nothing on J5... J3 and 4 are jumpered at pin 2 and 3 on both.. IS this good? I'm using no ribbon mics.. All dynamic and condencers into a motu hd192... I guess I'm trying to get everything to kinda compilment my A12 volume wise.

They have similar gain ranges, I'd expect the out levels to be similar, at the same settings, with the same input.

I'd run the J99 at a lower voltage than that, which keeps the 990's cooler. Maybe 20?

Will setting the voltage to 20 change the tone?

Changing the voltages doesn't affect the gain, only the maximum output level. The higher the supply rails, the higher the output can go before clipping. Reducing the voltage from +/-24 to +/-20 won't change the tone, but peak output before clipping will go from about 27dB to about 25dB.

So will setting the voltage lower like +-20 set it to more of what the A12 output is?

Lowering the voltage doesn't change the amount of gain...only the amount of headroom. If you are running a AD stage directly the headroom is FAR higher than that of the converters even at less than 20v.

The headroom might be useful when recording dynamic sources in cases such that you are feeding another analog device (i.e. compressor) before the AD stage.

using that pre for drum overheads, bass and vocals... should I put it 24? There will be no compression going in... nothing between the pre and AD

Then 20v is fine. The A/D converter will max out before you hit the top on the preamp.
