J99 gain is very hot

i just tried out the J99's on a drum tracking session. i'm using a pair for overheads. the drummer played an average level. not hitting too hard on anything. the J99's are very hot. i can't turn them up passed 2 without it clipping the input it's going into (directly into a MOTU 1224.)
i recall in the testing part phase of the building process that r28 and r32 (if i recall correctly) set the voltage going to the opamps. i believe i set them to a couple points below the recommended value. should i lower this again to give myself more headroom?
btw - these things sound amazing.
