N72 Gain/Trim Question

Postby Fattyma4 » Mon Apr 21, 2014 12:35 pm

When building my N72, I think I accidentally did something to make my 6db fader knob host ALL the gain, instead of just the 6db.
I've had it working for months now, and I can live with it, this way.
I'm just curious what I did wrong.... And, if it's an easy fix?

Plus, I REALLY didn't want to have to take it all apart again, and troubleshoot, myself, IF it's a lost cause.

Any ideas?

Been so long since I built mine - but yes - There is an option to make the trim a "full fader".

Most N72 users prefer this "Full Fader" mode as it allows you to goose-up the input gain for some drive, and then back-off with the trim so you don't clip your AD's. Granted, this fader is pre-output transformer, but still allows some nice driven sounds if you want to experiment. Padding the XLR output to your interface would allow you to saturate the output transformer (if desired). This is also fun to experiment with...

Interesting...

To your original post/inquiry: If one wants the traditional 6db trim function as in the other preamp modules, one simply replaces R20 (currently a 0R/jumper to facilitate what you described) with a 10K resistor - I confirmed this with Tim. Hence (for "future generations" reading this) R20 = 0R/jumper => "full fader"; R20 = 10K => "6db trim (consistent with other preamp function)" where the "full fader/0R" is currently the default.
