Discrete Live Recording

Hi there!
This site is exactly what I was looking for when I started looking at building my own mic preamp!

My question has to do with sonic clarity of these units. I mainly do live recordings of rock AND classical music. I'm less interested in coloration and more interested in clarity, specifically if I need to have one of these things up pretty high. Would I be more interested in building a J99 or an A12 using high quality transformers and ops? And would you suggest the jensens if I was looking for a very neutral sound?

Sorry if these questions are very basic I'm new to the whole DIY thing, and thanks a lot for the site!
