Hi, I normally steer clear of singing but recently have been trying to improve.. but when I sing I tend to some how agitate my voicebox so much it makes me cough quite violently.. it feels like my vocal chords get tangled! has anyone else experienced this or could offer advice on a cure?! Its not health related as I dont cough normally at the moment

You are singing from your throat rather than from your diaphragm. Rummage around YouTube, and I am sure that you will find some voice coaching instruction to fix it.

Not only will you fix the coughing problem, but you will sound much better.

Read this, that will help you develop singing skills without a teacher:
