Finally FInished my SCA Rack!

Postby jmettam » Thu Dec 22, 2011 7:49 am

Just thought I would share the joy! I finally filled up my SCA rack with the last two modules last week.

First I have to say that I have had nothing but excellent experiences with these kits. I am a mildly cautious builder (check twice, solder once) and I have had ZERO problems with the entire project. Each pre work fine upon completion and calibration. Everything went together smoothly with a build time of 2-4 hours each.

I started out with a pair each of the A12, N72, and J99 to test them out. I play/record a lot of different types of music so I knew I would have applications for each type of pre. They all sound fantastic!

Upon first usage (vocals) I liked the N72 the best for it's wide range of coloration and edginess when pushed. I also liked the A12 but my first impression was it was a little too dark and fuzzy for my taste.

After using them on various instruments I found that I kept wanting more A12s, especially on drums (I am a drummer!) SO, in the end it was a no brainer. 2 more A12s and now I'm full up and ready to go.

Of course I really want some of Tim's new compressors. Plus another pair of N72s and J99s wouldn't hurt :>)

Thanks for the great Preamps Tim!

That's one nice looking rack there. I wish mine was that full. One day it will be.

Hey, since you're a drummer... Do you like those J99's and if so, what on particularly? Those are the only pres I have not tried of Tim's yet and was curious to hear what a drummer thinks. I'm sure they would excel on OH duty.

Hi Karl,

You are correct! Overheads for drums and also on percussion mics, especially subtle things. Of course they sound great on anything and I wouldn't hesitate to use them on any drum. Just a little less character.

They are also great for room mics and acoustic instruments. They are fantastic for Classic/Acoustic music.
