Pads - Unbalanced Output to Balanced Input

Postby mta250 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 9:10 am

Hey all,

I have an N72 that I want to use as a color device for synths and software instruments, etc. I'm a little confused as to what type of pad to make though.

The outputs of my soundcard (apogee duet) and my synths are unbalanced, but the inputs of the preamps are obviously balanced. Do I make a T-Pad or an H-Pad? Do I need to make a special cable, or just use a TRS-XLR cable?

Thanks!

T pad.

Depends on how the output jacks are wired. The input signal needs to be applied between pins 2 and 3 of the XLR. The cable can't leave one or the other floating. Pin 3 usually gets grounded when going from unbalanced to balanced.
