Phantom Power issue with home made XLR cable

Postby evolver » Sun Sep 27, 2009 4:29 pm

So -- i have never run into this problem before and was wondering if anyone might have some insight that could help me out. I put together some xlr cables last night with canare starquad and neutrik connectors. they work fine in the following circumstances:

1) connected to my motu 828 preamps directly with phantom/condensor mic
2) connected to my motu 828 preamps directly with a dynamic mic
3) connected to my SCA rack with a dynamic
4) connected to my sytek mpx with a dynamic

Both the sytek and seventh circle do not pass phantom over these cables, but for some reason the 828 does. Also, when i test the 828 with my multimeter i get a steady 48v. When i use a monster cable on the SCA and Sytek i get a steady 48v, but my custom cables pass nothing.

When i made the cables i soldered two of the wires together to connect to ground (since it comes with 4 inside) -- before i tear them apart and waste time on the wrong thing -- anyone think that would possibly affect it ?

has anyone else ever run into this ?

I make all of my own mic cables using the same parts you describe I don't have any problems with the SCA pres and my cables. They are wired like this.

XLR
X, 1=shield
L, 2=+ signal (two same color wires in quad together)
R, 3=- signal (two same color wires in quad together)

ahh, i was making my own fake ground instead of using the shield as a ground. im surprised i never ran into this problem before.

that's what you get for being a n00b i guess :)

thanks!

so i took one apart and rewired it as above and still don't get phantom on the SCA and Sytek, but do on the motu 828.

so weird. is it possible to get "bad" cable that would work so consistently in different situations like this ?

With phantom power on you should read about 48 VDC between pin 1 to 2 and between pin 1 and 3. You should read 0 VDC between pins 2 and 3. Try this at the output jack of the pre, and also at the mic end of the cable when plugged in.
