So I've been milling around a bit, and reading up on things and I've noticed two main things; the two kits that seem to be the most prefertial are the N72, and the A12... I suspect because they're the Neve and API clones and that's a generally sought after sound (duh).

My question however, is I am looking to do a 4 channel kit for drums and vocals - so I'd like it to do double duty, however, I'm also looking to keep it afforadable as I want to add this to a documentary about DIY studio work, and making a professional record from a home studio - thus a DIY high end pre kit is a great alternative to expensive pre's. The drums are simply 2 overhads (Mojave MA-100's) and a kick and a snare...maybe some toms but the Mojave's do such an awesome job I don't really mic the toms, which is neither here nor there. The vocals are all over the place from rock to hip hop to Celiene and Mariah vocals.

I don't see the T15's mentioned very often, and was considering 2 T15's, a N72 and a A12...or 4 T-15's, or maybe even 2 T-15's, a 84, and a N72 or A12.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You'll definitely want a stereo pair out of your 4 pres.

I would even be tempted to advise a pair of A12s and a pair of N72s. But it's hard to know, unless you give more info about your type of music.

I have two A12s and a single N72. I love them both dearly. I'm tempted to get a J99 for my fourth, for variety purposes. As you can tell, I'm less interested in accuracy and more in beautiful coloration.

If money is really tight, you should consider two T-15s, an N72 and an A12

I absolutely agree I need a stereo pair - the sound I'm looking for is that "Andy Wallace" sound - but what I'm attempting to do is show people that on a budget, with the right gear you can make professional results. So it's sort of a give and a take - although I'd like to get the super great stuff - like the N72 and A12 it may put it out of budget for a lot of people which is what I'm trying to avoid.

So the T15 and N72 A12 combo's may be a great alternative to all high end stuff...so it wont scare off people with limited budget.

I was leaning toward the T15's for my stereo pair, but after some thought and research I went with two C84's. Very neutral, which I'm sure the T15's are also. I also used them for vocals with good results til I got an N72. I was expecting a lot of clean gain from the C84 and was not let down. The unexpected surprise was the new life the C84 gave to dynamic mics. The high freq. is so much more detailed than before that I can use my old 421's and 441 for a lot more than before.
