Which pres for drum overheads?

Hello, I am in the process of filling the SCA rack case with 8 pres. So far I have built 2 A12's and 2 N72's (and love them). My plan for right now is to get 2 more A12's and 2 J99's. Mostly I am looking at the J99's to be used for drum overheads (and other instruments) since from what I gather they are very clean.

My question is, for those who have these pres and have used them, what would you say are the best for overheads? Are the J99's good? Should I instead get more A12's or N72's (I figured that by getting the J99's I'll also get more "colors" on my palette)?

Thanks,

Rob

I vote for a pair of J99's. The C84 and T15 should both sound great and work well for overheads but will be more neutral and "boring" sounding than the J99. You can then add two more A12's to finish loading out your chassis.

If you do classical recording at all, get a pair of C84s. If you do country recording at all, get a pair of J99s. Either will be plenty good for OHs, as will the T15s if your budget is tight.
