Hamptone or SC A12?

Postby corn55 » Fri Jul 27, 2007 4:22 am

This is not a question about which sounds better, I've owned a Hamptone and I've owned API modules. I've just never assembled my own pre. Both are great sounding pres and I wouldn't assume the SC A12 to sound any less stellar.

I purchased a practice board from Radio shack with some resistors and did really well. I've soldered my own cables many times in the past. So it's not really about soldering, as I can do that pretty well. It is more about *organizing* and *assembling* all the components in the right order and the correct direction.

Which assembly would be easiest, the Hamp or the A12?

I've never assembled a Hamptone, but judging from their instructions you'll have to do a bit more work than with our system. The PS03KA comes assembled and tested so you don't have to worry about building the power supply, and you need to do less point-to-point wiring because of the WH01KA.

Well, I actually was just getting ready to order the N72. After reading the instructions it looks pretty easy. Thanks for the reply.

Well, at the last second I decided to go with the A12 pre's instead. Always go with your initial gut feeling so I did. Neve, eh.. maybe one of these days, but API was the reason I came here, so I'm in BAAAABYYY!!! Cannot wait to get these babies put together and fired up!! Ok.. calm down, take it slooooowww, slow is good, take your time... do it right... Heh... just a tad excited here.
