Best pre for use with Ribbon mics

Postby soundfields » Tue Jun 28, 2011 11:08 pm

Hi... a brand new member... I've been thinking about building a SCA preamp.... I want to build a couple N72s for a couple Gefell mics I plan to get, but what would be the best SCA preamp to use with ribbon mics... I am considering getting an AEA or Coles mic...

Thanks!

i'm not certain of which is best for your ribbons but my experience is with the t15 and c84's in conjunction with cheap ribbons. i needed more gain to get the levels in line with my other tracks. increased gain yielded noise so i've been looking at the triton fethead as a signal booster before going into the pre. here's the lingo - http://tritonaudio.com/index.php?sectionid=4&option=com_content&task=category&id=17&Itemid=33

there's others on the market. Michael Joly of Oktavamod hardwires the fetheads onto ribbons so i thought these would be a good place to start.
so, to answer your question the best i can - get whatever pre and ribbon you want and if you need more signal get a fethead or similar device.
