What size solder iron tip?

Postby boneglove » Sat Jan 12, 2008 2:33 pm

I have the Hakko 936. Is the original tip good or should i get smaller. It will be my first time soldering on a circuit board so if it would make it easier I'll get another. I plan on getting all of these pre's eventually but I'm going to start with a guitar pedal kit first as Tim suggested. TIA, Mark.

P.S. part # greatly appreciated.

Buy a range of tips, they'll come in handy and they're cheap. I think my biggest is a 1.5mm chisel chip, and my smallest is a tiny conical one.

Switching to a very small tip when soldering the gain switches on the SCA cards will make it much easier to avoid solder bridges and the like. I used a medium size chisel tip (probably the one that came with the unit) for most of the other assembly; it heats the work more quickly and will make for better solder joints for most of the connections.
