soldering iron question

Postby jtdeans » Sat Apr 14, 2007 4:37 pm

hello all
I was curious, having gotten a WTCPT "soldering station" if this soldering iron would be appropriate for working on these SCA PCBs. It seems to have different tips for different tempuratures - 600F 700F and 800F. The soldering iron wattage is rated at 42 watts, iron weight 2 ounces, recovery time with PTA7 tip is 11 seconds... I know it says that use an iron from 20-30 but would i really be risking my board in using this iron? i have the PTA7 tip, which is noted to run around 700F. Do I need to get a different iron, do i need to switched to the 600 degree F tip, can i stick with this iron - do i need to be more careful if i do?

I really don't want to ruin any of these preamps...

thanks,
confused

better solder at 400F, if more hot then that you can damage componant.
dont worry for resistance, they are tought, not the same for capacitor.

but as a rule of thumb, 400F and youre good to go. you seem to have the right tip and solderstation.

good luck!

I use around 700F I don't think I could get a good joint at 400F.
Here is some useful info www.elexp.com/t_solder.htm

i'm using the same soldering station and have build dozens of MOTM modules with it. i haven't build any SCA modules -- yet but i think this one will work great.
