Oscilloscope for A12, C84, and J99?

Postby bkspero » Tue Nov 07, 2006 7:48 pm

The first pages of the assembly instruction files for the a12, c84, and J99 pre-amps list an oscilloscope as an optional assembly tool, but there is no mention of its use in the assembly instructions themselves. I understand that a scope is not necessary, but am both interested in how a scope might be used and if there could be any benefit to be gained if one were used. I'd appreciate any guidance you could give me about this. Thanks in advance.

There are pictures and instructions on pages 18 & 19 of the
manual for the N72. Looks like fun... and having an oscilloscope
would add a huge level of techno-geek-wow-factor to any
workbench.

Using TrueRTA on a computer as signal generator and o'scope

Postby bkspero » Thu Dec 21, 2006 9:15 pm

I saw the instructions for using an oscilloscope for the N72. What I was hoping to find out was how a scope is used for the assembly of the other 3 models of preamp. An oscilloscope is listed as optional equipment for all 4 preamp versions. But only the N72 uses one in an optional instruction.

I've been using TrueRTA (www.Trueaudio.com) software under windows as both a signal generator and an oscilloscope. The only issue is that it needs the signal attenuated or it will saturate the input. I wound up building an input pad that cuts the signal by about 30 dB before it gets to the computer. Works great.

With the N72, the scope can be helpful for setting the bias correctly for maximum headroom. On the others, the scope is useful for troubleshooting if things don't work as expected.
