600 ohm output impedance into a12, n72, j99

Postby Category 5 » Sun Oct 09, 2005 11:16 pm

How ideal would the Radial active DI (the big one with variable input impedance for active/passive/piezo) running into the SCA modules. I know the SCA expects about a 200ohm source as configured stock, and the output of the radial DI is 600 ohms.

Radial is expecting the DI to drive a AD input of higher impedance no doubt, not the 1200ohm input of the SCA modules.

What would that do to the sound? I am looking for the BEST way to get bass (passive & active), guitar, and piezo based acoustic/mandolin into my modules, and I know it will work...I just thought I'd ask before I drop the dough on the DI.

thanks!

I use the Radial Pro DI with my SCA pres. It sounds great. I think a passive DI would be a better bet for use with a mic pre, right? Doesn't an active DI usually put out a line level signal?

An Active DI usually puts out line level, but I checked the Radial website, and big DI active DI box (JDV active super DI, if that's the one he's referring to) specs state that it's a unity gain device, in other words, it doesn't convert an instrument level to line level.

I got good sound using a passive Groove Tubes (looks like the common Whirlwind boxes) DI into N72, A12, J99.

A good D.I. is what I am looking for.

Is this the one that you are using?

I need to get a good D.I. since I am recording my CD in December.
I want to split my signal and record it direct to disk as well thru amps.
This way, I will have the option to re-amp my signal.

So I have a couple of questions.

1. What kind of splitter should I get to prevent my signal from deteriorating? Active Passive?
One of them will go to the amp theo other to disk thru D.I.?

2. Do I need anything to convert the signal back to guitar pickuup levels for re-amping?

That's the GT DI, works fine for me. You should be able to split the signal with it; try it, see how it sounds.

Yes, you need a special gadget for proper reamping. Radial makes one, and there's the official, patented, overpriced Reamp (www.reamp.com). If you're feeling handy, check the Jensen transformer site for a schematic for a reamping box using a high quality Jensen transformer and a few resistors.

This is the newest version of the DI I use - mine is much older, but still the bomb as far as DI's go:

I use two different approaches. The first is to use my old Shure high-to-low impedance transformer for direct ins to the mic pre. The second is to use the Peterson StroboStomp. It is a strobe tuner (they always come in handy) that has a 1/4 out to feed amp, etc., and an XLR to feed a mic pre.

Which schematic is it?

Thanks

I've built 2 passive DI's, one with a Lundahl transformer and the other a Cinemag transformer. They both play nice with my N72 and A12. My bass player was playing through the box with the Cinemag and the N72. I didn't tell him he was playing through any new or different gear, but he was estatic with the tone he was getting.
