Postby nickkbh » Tue May 02, 2006 7:30 pm

Hi Guys.
I am quite new in the diy business.
But i am eager to get started.

So my q is:
What mic pre, would suit my DPA 4006 best.
Also, what kit would be easiest to start with.

Thanks

That's a difficult question to answer without you providing more details. What kind of music do you typically record? Is there a specific type of sound that you are wanting to emulate? Due to the fact that you only mention one microphone, I assume that you are probably singer/songwriter? Probably play acoustic guitar or piano?

My only hands on experience with Tim's preamps is the J99. I would describe it as pretty transparent with a bit of added warmth. It's a very fast preamp, and sounds great on most stringed instruments. I hope to have the opportunity to track a mandolin sometime soon. I haven't used the C84, but I have used the Millennia preamp that it is most often compared to, and it is about as transparent as any preamp I've ever heard.

Give us some more information, and I'm sure that somebody more qualified than myself can help steer you in the right direction.

Good Luck,

Based on my limited first hand knowledge of these preamps, I'd be inclined to tell you to look into the C84 or the J99. Typically with voiceover work, you're not looking for a preamp to color your sound. The API (A12) and Neve (N72) preamps are famous for their "color".

I'd be interested to hear what others tell you.

I disagree. I think the N72 would be best for voiceovers. It has a creamy quality that attarcts my attention even when peopel are simply babbling on the mic. It would add a smoothness to voice that would certainly benefit VO work...

Not to mention the N72's utility in other areas. If you record a variety of instruments I think you'll find that any of the SCA pres will excite. You really need them all to get the full range of tonal benefits though.

VO? I'd say definitely the N72.
