Building these were fun.
I am blown away by their sound though...

J99 recording

C84 recording

C84 sounds a little more neutral.
J99s are a bit colored but not as much as a Neve clone...

I am curious if you like them.

Recorded with a single APEX 415 straight in to PT LE with NO EQ.
Just a touch of Lexicon Reverb...

I was curious to hear J99s vs C84s especilly on ac gtr. I have to say that the J99s are much mre interesting to me, the c84s probably sound more acurate, but the j99s sound more like a recording.

There are some spaces between the small performances.
I tried to do arpeggios, strumming and solo playing...
So, don't think that the playback has finished after the first space...

The first little performance sounded better to me with J99.
However, the solo performance of Bill Evans' s Blue In Green (Miles Davis says it's his song but... ) sounded better to me with C84.

It could be because I love the sound of my hand made Lowden acoustic.
ANd... C84 sounds just like it was in the room with you.

The detailed low-mid of J99 is amazing though.

If Tim wants me to, I could prepare a bunch of little performances and make them in to MP3s so people will have an idea of what they sound like with acoustic and electric guitars.

I do not have an A12 and my N72 is still on its way.
However, I could record...
Electric guitar + Amp + C84 | J99 | N72 ( | = or )
Then...
Acoustic Guitar + (stereo pencil Mikes | Stereo Large Diaphram Condenser | Pickup | Large Diaphram Condenser) +C84 | J99 | N72

This would cover the almost the entire range of acoustic and electric guitar sounds. If Tim let's me borrow A12s for a few days, THen I could record with them as well...

Thanks for putting that recording up. Really cool. Makes me think maybe I DO need to get a couple C84s. I was gonna try not to spend any more money.

Well, a lot of people listened to them (recordings) and a lot of people preferred C84 over J99 just because they sound so real.
I wish you could come and listen to my hand made Lowden Acoustic.
It is a beautiful sounding guitar.
It is from the time when Geaorge Lowden worked alone in a small factory.
C84s make the mike (Apex415) sound like as if the guitar is in the room with you.
It is that accurate.
$150 a channel, is not bad either.
It took a bit longer for me to build them compared to a J99.
I guess it is because they do not come in seperate Digi-Key bags like J99 and you have to measure each and everyone of them to be on the safe side.

Odd that the C84 seemed so much leaner than the J99s. I have always thought the J99's were very present and focused in the upper range. On a frequency sweep it actually shows the J99 up about a dB at 20k (it is usually the opposite, such as is the case with the Neve).

At any rate, your samples sounded the opposite of what I would expect. Are you absolutely sure the mic position and playing dynamic was the same during both samples?

I usually record without mike at home.
I move my laptop and 002R to my friend's loft for onsite recording.

Why?
I expected C84 to be more neutral and it was.

Yes, positioning was the same except I might have moved just a bit during playing.
