Audio snake termination

Postby salik » Mon Nov 30, 2015 5:42 pm

I'm building a snake to connect my SCA pre's to a mixer (Soundcraft) for live sound work. I also would like to send the outputs to a multi-track digital recorder. My plan is to Y the output from the SCA, use an inline male XLR plug for the recorder signal and connect to the recorder using a female XLR to TRS. If both the mixer and recorder are connected, the signal lines will all be terminated by the input impedance of the either the recorder or mixer channels. But if the recorder is not connected one side of the Y output is an open circuit. In this situation, should the open line be terminated and if so by what resistance? The termination could simply be a resistor wired between pins 2 and 3 in a female XLR, for example. I'm concerned about noise and hum being introduced into a very quiet connection from the SCA's.
