Seperate Power Supply for D11

Postby alopez78 » Mon Jan 03, 2011 11:13 am

So my chassis if completely full!! (2 N72, 4 A12 & 2 C84). I have a D11 but no more space in the box. I cant justify buying another PS03 or CH01 just for one module. How can I supply power to the D11 externally(meaning not in the CH01)? Is there a way that I can build my own PS or is there an aftermarket PS that I can buy?

I never thought I'd fill up a second chassis either - but I did!

If you'll ever need more than your 8 current Preamps - I would consider investing in a second SCA rack - and even add a T15 or something cheap. I'm not sure if the DI gets the package discount - but the T15 will...

You'll probably want some J99's at some point - and you'll need another rack then  With the package discounts - it ends up being surprisingly affordable (probably about the same as you buying an external PSU and some sort of enclosure for the single DI anyway - but then you'll have 7 open slots for future expansion!)

Edit - The DI doesn't quality for the package discount - but the $79 T15 does qualify for the $297 SCA Package Discount! So, $478 for another Chassis, PSU, DI kit and T15 kit vs probably like $200 for a generic 1RU chassis and PSU (and still need the $79 SCA DI Kit, and some fabricating to get it mounted, too!). AND you'll have a T15 and 6 free slots for future expansion. Seems like a no brainer to me...

Thanks for replying Randyman. What your saying is somewhat true. Besides the 8 SCA pres, I have 4 other pres so 12 is more than enough for my small studio. I acutally already have an eclosure with the D11 already mounted all I need is a PSU to power it. Can anyone else help me out?

Based on the schematic you should be able to provide an unregulated + and - DC with a minimal amount of components (power transformer, bridge rectifier, 2 filter caps, maybe a couple of dropping resistors). I'd go with a couple of volts higher than what the +/- rails are regulated to.

The PS03 has more than enough current to drive an additional board, but it's up to you to do the wiring.

I see. So I guess what I'll end up doing is installing a connector on the chasis so that I can connect my D11 directly to it. I was hoping for an independent source other than the PS03, but oh well. Anyway thanks a bunch for your replies. By the way SCA Pres efen ROCK!!!!
