Can someone explain what the transformers will do?

I know that transformers can reduce hum, add color etc.., What do they do to the sound or options that you can't do without them? Sorry for noob question. Mark Tokach. Can't wait to get my first oder with 2 n72, 2 c84, and d11!

Add the transformer(s) to the D11 if you get hum when you connect the output to mic preamps in another chassis or to guitar amps. The recommended Jensen transformer is very clean and transparent and will not add much "color".
