A12 works great, but sounds thin w/ one microphone

Postby dirtypigeons » Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:10 am

Hey all,

I built the A12 a month or so ago, and it works great. Recently, I modded a MXL 2006 with better components and capsule. Mic sounds great, works great with my T15, C84, and other non-SCA pre's. When I plug it into the A12, it's super thin - almost like it's two mic's out of phase. I've used a bunch of other condensers on the A12 and they work fine. I'm communicating w/ the person who designed the mic mods, and they brought up the possibility of phantom power being the issue, but I don't think it would be that.

I know this is a tough one considering I put my hands in both the mic and the pre, but maybe you have an idea?

THANKS!
Brian

Do these "non-SCA" preamps have transformer balanced inputs?

Yes, all have XLR inputs.

XLR is not the issue - what I'm curious about is the input circuit. What preamps does the mic work with?

I have a Presonus Firestudio that the modded condenser works fine with, as well as the T15 & C84. Every mic I have used so far with the A12 (dynamic, condensor, & ribbon) have worked wonderfully other than the modded condenser.

I would suspect an open circuit on one of the output signals. Either pin 2 or pin 3 isn't connected correctly.
