Fader instead of trim

Is there a way that I can convert the fader into a trim pot, such as the n72 and T15? I'd like to see if I can push those transformers a little harder for some nice harmonic distortion. However, if it's not advisable please say so!

Nope. You might try a passive attenuator on the output such as the A Designs "ATTY".

Nope. You might try a passive attenuator on the output such as the A Designs "ATTY".


The ATTY looks suspiciously like 2x male and 2x female xlr jacks and a dual-gang audio taper 100k pot. Is there more to this or is this something we could make ourselves? Thanks for any help you can offer.

A 100K pot would work in many situations, but I hope it's an adjustable pad that maintains constant input and output impedance. If the input impedance of the final load is high (10K or more, say) compared to the output impedance of the preamp, a 10K pot would work.

why not run the output of the A12 to the T15, then fade accordingly with the T15?

Because then you'd be driving +28dBu or so into the T15's Mic Input - This would obliterate the signal well before reaching the T15's output attenuator ;)

I have some spare 600 Ohm Balanced Input Attenuators (spares from my mnats/hairball 1176 builds) that I plan on wiring up as patchable variable pads in addition to the -6dB and -12dB inline XLR pads I already use for this application.

Driving the A12's outputs (and transformers) hard for Rock Drums is a must IMO - and that just ain't gonna happen into most AD's on the planet w/o a pad on the A12's outputs.
