Establishing Proper Gain Structure

Postby audioartist202 » Sat Mar 03, 2007 7:15 am

Hi, I'm new here so please excuse any lack of (newbie) protocall.
I have been looking at these pre amps for a while and am planning to
jump in soon. They seem to have very good reviews from those who have
used them. I have several questions but I'll start with something simple.
It appears that these pre amps have no overload or "idiot light" so I was
wondering just how do you optomize the gain structure for the best performance without clipping?

The same way you do with any other preamp. Set your recorder or converters for unity gain (if you even have such controls available) with +4dB nominal levels. If you have a compressor, limiter, EQ, or any other piece of gear in the signal chain, set it to bypass or adjust for unity gain as well. Adjust the preamp gain until you have enough level at the recorder.

Thanks, I get that part. It's just like any other "one knob" pre amp.
I guess I'm just used to working with
pre amps that have an output stage. I believe I saw a post about
a mod that gave details on adding an overload light.
