Just recorded my first live jazz gig with my rack of 8 SSA pres, and the result is outstanding. I ran a pair of C84s for drum overheads (using the earthworks drumkit card. mics), a pair of J99s with Neumann TLM193s on a baby grand, a pair of N72s with TLM103s (on each for tenor sax and trumpet), and for the upright bass an N72 with a DPA 4006 shoved throught the bridge, and a J99 on a direct from the piezo through a MM TL-1.
The results are everything I could have hoped for. In the past, I used a rack of 8 Millennia Media pres (still the gold standard for all my classical recording, although the C84s are now supplementint those, as I really cannot find any discernable difference) and got great recordings, but not color and no life beyond pure reality which is not what I wanted for jazz. The presence of the piano with the J99s and the nice softening of the brass with the N72s is everything I was hoping for...and then some!
Tim, you have done a truly outstanding job, and after having bought and built 12 pres (I have a second rack with 4 C84s and space for four more of something in the future), you have a loyal costomer for life. I love them!
